The Electric Grapevine | Star Spangled Banter | 03.14.10

It has been awhile since I ventured past Washington State up until my trip to Las Vegas last week where I was reminded in true American fashion just how over the top the country can be. Granted Vegas is the pinnacle of excess, even on the way there I ran into some larger than life characters and portions for that matter.

Great film fest!

I would like to thank the Boundary film fest folks for a job well done. I found the films very informative and full of hope except one - H2oil which describes the awful truth of how our so called leaders have sold us all out by giving away this resource to the people to the south with no real benefit to all Canadians. Our search for alternative energy gets put on hold and as long as people get work not to many seem to care.

The Electric Grapevine | I Believe...a little more than normal anyhow | 02.25.10

At this juncture I expected to be writing a somewhat negative article regarding the 2010 Games that would have been easy target practice for my usual rants. The overspending, the grim death and the absurd characters used in the marketing were all set up like bowling pins just waiting to be taken down.

Change in a changing world

When I first moved to GrandForks I was asked to help with some healing circles that delt with some pretty touchy subjects and did my best to help. The one thing I forgot to say to these groups is that with healing or change comes the responsibiltiy of doing the real work of looking at our behavior and making the changes for the highest good for all instead of shooting the messenger and pretending that we can not or do no wrongs. And who pays for our follies? The people we serve ? the youth?

The Electric Grapevine | The Upside of Down | 1.31.10

All of the local media have reported on the marijuana theme with catchy, cute little plays on words but I just can't bring myself to do it. So let me be blunt and avoid all of the cliches those joints are using and light this column up without resorting to tokin' word plays.

With Cannabiz now relegated to reruns it will be interesting to see how opinions vary throughout the area. As the director himself stated, it doesn't appear that the film will sway anyone from either side of the razor wire fence but it sure makes for interesting discussion.

Prohibition - Learn from History

The message behind the CBC’s Cannabiz show is not that Grand Forks is the pot capital and is totally crime-ridden but that in order to reduce local crime and increase a legitimate economy we need to consider abolishing the prohibition of marijuana.
