The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Emergency Operations Centre has scheduled two meetings for Tuesday (May 15) in Rock Creek and grand Forks to discuss the current flood situation.

The meeting in Rock Creek has been scheduled for the Rock Creek Fairgrounds from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. while the Grand Forks event is being hosted at Grand Forks Secondary School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Officials will be present to update community members on the current flood situation and will be available to answer some pressing questions.

“Community involvement during this time of unprecedented flooding has been remarkable,” the RDKB media release said.

“Volunteers are tirelessly supporting relief efforts across the Boundary region. So far, 220,000 sandbags have been distributed.”

The RDKB said emergency officials are cautioning the public to remain vigilant in anticipation of the second surge of water from melting snow set to pass through local watersheds this week.

“The RDKB continues to work closely with local government officials in preparation of this event.”

The RDKB cautions the public must remain out of evacuated areas.

“Evacuation orders have been put in place for public safety and those entering restricted areas put themselves at risk as well as divert resources from critical flood efforts,” the RDKB said.

“Crews continue to repair critical dikes in the Boundary region in priority sequence.”

Many Grand Forks residents have registered with the Red Cross upon evacuation. Loved ones wanting to connect with them can call 250 442-1658 or 250 442-1556.

  • It is extremely important to be safe when near floodwater.
  • River levels can rise quickly and currents can be unpredictable.
  • The ground can be soft and unstable causing extremely poor footing.
  • Exercise extreme caution.
