Phillips, George Barry
November 18, 1932 – September 9, 2013
Barry was born in Chemainus, B.C. and passed away peacefully at his home in Christina Lake, B.C. after a four and a half month battle with cancer. His father George Phillips, mother Emma and stepfather Robert Turnbull predeceased Barry. He is survived by his wife Peggy of 57 years, children Doug, David (Marjory), Monica (Jeffrey) and five grandchildren, James, Robb, and Lex Phillips, Kayden and Jenna Sim, and two step grandchildren Aaron and Shane Roberts.
Barry attended elementary school in Chemainus, B.C. and Christina Lake (at Cascade) and graduated from Grand Forks Secondary School. He continued his education at UBC and graduated in 1956 with a BSc in Pharmacy and completed a year of medical school. Barry moved back to Grand Forks and worked as a pharmacist for Jack Acres, later becoming a partner, and then bought the business. Some years later, he also started the pharmacy at the Boundary Hospital. After a successful career of 35 years, he retired in 1993. During his working and retirement life he was one of the co-founders of the Christina Lake Golf Course (membership #3), was an active participant in the local Trap Club, Curling Club and Cub Scout Leader. He was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 37 and received his 50-year pin. He was an avid fisherman, particularly salmon fishing on the West Coast and then later deep-sea fishing in Mexico. He enjoyed hunting in his early years and then later on became a passionate gardener, baker, and Sudoku player. Huckleberry picking was a favourite family ritual in the summers. He became interested in world travelling after a little push from Peggy with New Zealand and Africa being two of his most memorable trips. A richly lived life, he will be greatly missed by family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at Christina Lake Community Hall on Monday September 30th, 2013 at 1pm.
