NDP MLA Katrine Conroy says new, affordable rentals coming to West Kootenays

NDP MLA Katrine Conroy says 46 new, affordable rental homes are coming to West Kootenays for people with low to moderate incomes.

“People across the Kootenays know how important housing is to their own, their neighbours’, and their community’s wellbeing,” said MLA Conroy. “Communities big and small have been feeling the housing crunch for years, and it’s great to see organizations in Fruitvale, Slocan and New Denver working in partnership with our government to create much-needed homes.”

The Lower Columbia Affordable Housing Society will build 28 new units in Fruitvale for seniors, families, and persons with disabilities, the Village of Slocan will build eight new units for seniors, families and singles, and the New Denver and Area Housing Society will build ten new units for seniors, families and singles.

Provided by the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, these new affordable rental homes are part of 47 new projects, which will deliver more than 2,400 new homes across the province.

A total of 47 new projects have been selected through this second intake of the Building BC: Community Housing Fund (CHF). The intake will provide approximately 2,455 rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities and Indigenous peoples throughout the province. More than 1,000 of the new homes will be for Indigenous individuals, families and Elders.

These projects have 50% of units for households with incomes up to $64,000, 30% of units for households with incomes up to approximately $74,000, and 20% of units for households with very low incomes (including those on income or disability assistance).

The Community Housing Fund is part of the BC NDP government’s 10-year $7-billion housing plan. It is an investment of $1.9 billion to build more than 14,000 affordable rental homes for moderate- and low-income families and individuals. Three and a half years in, more than 8,600 of these homes are already open, under construction or in development.
