Seedy Saturday: A sure sign of spring

Lorraine Dick, Ag Society secretary and coordinator for the community garden in Grand Forks, demonstrated how to create your own seed tapes using toilet paper, a mixture of flour and water to secure the seed on the toilet paper and, of course, a seed. In this case she was using holly hock seeds. Seed tapes make planting a breeze by securing seeds in the precise space they need to be between each other. Photo Erin Perkins.
Rosemary Phillips shows off the seeds she brought in to share at the Seedy Saturday event. Phillips offered up Dukhobor sunflower seeds she got from the Veregin family in 2006. This was the first time Phillips had attended Seedy Saturday. She says over the last few years she has become increasingly involved in growing both organically and using heritage seeds due to climate change and food security issues. The annual Seedy Saturday Seed Share and Exchange, hosted by the Grand Forks and Boundary Agricultural Society (GFBAS) and the Boundary Organic Producers was a huge success as dozens of gardening enthusiasts and novices filtered into the Anglican Church hall on Saturday, March 10.

A variety of seeds were on hand for exchange or purchase including Hopi corn, sunflower seeds, watermelons seeds, varieties of beans, tomatoes and lettuces.
