Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Highway 3, Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass for Monday evening and into Tuesday.

Environment Canada said a prolonged snowfall is expected with totals near 15 cm by Tuesday afternoon.

“Snowfall amounts up to 5 cm today, 5 cm tonight and another 5 to 10 cm on Tuesday,” Environment Canada said.

The storm is expected to roll through the mountain passes from now through Tuesday afternoon with the potentially of making difficult travel.

“Paulson Summit has received several centimetres of snow already and snow will spread to Kootenay Pass by this afternoon.,” Environment Canada said.

“Snow will end late Tuesday afternoon. Snow levels will hover near 1300 metres through the event.”

Environment Canada said rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
