Interfor to curtail June operations at mills in Castlegar, Grand Forks and Adams Lake
Interfor mills outside of Castlegar, Grand Forks and Adams Lake are to see another production curtailment in the month of June, according to a press release issued by Interfor Tuesday.
“Interfor Corporation today announced plans to temporarily reduce production across its operating platform in the BC Interior during the month of June 2019 due to a combination of weak lumber prices and continuing high log costs,” the press release read.
“The curtailment is expected to reduce production in the region by approximately 20 million board feet for the month of June and will be taken by way of reduced operating days at each of the three BC Interior mills.”
This comes after a similar curtailment in May due to challenging market conditions, according to Interfor senior vice president and CFO, Martin L. Juravsky, who added staffers are aware of the changes to take place.
“There’s direct communication with our mill employees at that level, as there is all the time,” he said.
Juravsky also said the company remains committed to the continued operation of all three mills.
“Those mills are extremely well-positioned for the long term,” he said.
Interfor has three sawmills in the BC Interior, with total annual capacity of approximately 750 million board feet.
