RDKB issues State of Local Emergency Changes
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary said in a media release Monday that States of Local Emergency declared for Electoral Areas C and D, and the City of Grand Forks will be cancelled as of 4 p.m.
The RDKB said they will be immediately replaced by States of Local Emergency for Electoral Area D and the City of Grand Forks specific to nine (9) properties which are still at high risk as a result of the floods over the past few weeks.
“The regional States of Local Emergency covering the whole of Areas C and D, and the City of Grand Forks were due to expire over the next couple of days, and had been left in place because of the evacuation orders still impacting the nine properties,” the RDKB release said.
“Threats from further flooding have diminished throughout the Boundary, and the RDKB Emergency Operation Centre rescinded evacuation alerts for Electoral Areas C, D, and E, including Christina Lake, Grand Forks, and Midway on Saturday, May 26, with the exception of the 9 addresses on evacuation order for properties where there is still a threat to life safety.”
The RDKB said limited States of Local Emergency will remain in effect for as long as the nine Evacuation Orders are required.
Important Reminders:
- When cleaning out your flood-damaged home…Fridges/Freezers – If the contents can be cleaned out, that’s great. If not, Please secure the door/lid with tape or rope.
- It is extremely important to be safe when near area rivers. Erosion and sloughing of river banks during the high-water events has left the ground soft and unstable causing extremely poor footing. Exercise extreme caution.
- Anyone whose home is on a riverbank and who is concerned about riverbank stability should stay clear and report concerns to the Emergency Operations Centre.
- The contact for the Emergency Operations Centre is 1-888-747-9119.
