The Southeast Fire Centre said in a media release Wednesday that BC Wildfire Service personnel, in conjunction with BC Parks, will be conducting a prescribed burn near the Blue Joint wildfire in Granby Provincial Park on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, weather permitting.

The Southeast Fire Centre said the Blue Joint wildfire currently covers about 1,824 hectares and the prescribed-burn site is about 58 kilometres northwest of Grand Forks.

“This lightning-caused wildfire is burning in a remote area and is not threatening any communities or structures. It was discovered on Aug. 8, 2017 and is classified as a modified response fire, which means that it is being monitored closely and assessed regularly, but is not being actively suppressed.”

The Southeast Fire Centre said the goal of the prescribed burn is to create a fuel break to protect merchantable timber, reduce the amount of dead and combustible material (forest fuels) in the area, delay the growth of competing vegetation and decrease the risk of future catastrophic wildfires in the area.

“This prescribed burn aligns with the BC Parks fire management strategy to reduce forest fuels and mimic natural fire cycles on the landscape. All prescribed burns must comply with the Environmental Management Act and the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation to help minimize the amount of smoke generated.”

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
