The Grand Forks Piranhas concluded an amazing season on the Kootenay Summer Swim Association circuit with “fantastic” Regional Swim Meet.

The Piranhas finished third overall behind Castlegar and Kimberley at the meet held this past weekend in Nelson.

“I am so proud of all the swimmers who attended because they all had amazing swims,” said coach Samantta Villanueva.

Grand Forks finished on top of the meet in points, but officially we placed third to Castlegar and Kimberley because the points were averaged by the number of swimmers.

“Our 25 swimmers won 87 personal best times proving that our hard work over the season did pay off,’’ Villanueva said.

“Every Piranha in attendance qualified for at least one provincial event by placing in the top three in their individual events or top two in a relay event.

“And 16 of those swimmers have chosen to attend the Provincial Championships held in Kamloops next weekend.

The Piranhas broke 6 regional meet records:

  • Kiyomi Dunnet: Girls div 5 50 fly with 29.48 (old 30.85 2002) and 50 freestyle with 27.93 (old 28.24 1985)
  • Jasmine Konken: Girls div 4 50 butterfly with 29.11 (old 29.20 2004)
  • Shian Corbeil: Girls div 5 100 butterfly with 1:06.83 (old 1:11.19 2016)

Alan LeRoy was awarded the Cora Lee Schupfer Trophy for volunteer work for the region.
