The West Kootenay Boundary regions dodged the rath of Mother Nature as Environment Canada cancelled the Special weather statements for the area Wednesday afternoon.

Updated: Weather Statement ends for Kootenay Lake, continues for Highway 3

The Special weather statement for Kootenay Lake has been cancelled by Environment Canada.

However, the weather statement remains for Highway 3, Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada said freezing levels over the BC interior have dropped significantly in the wake of a cold front.

“Some highway passes can expect near or below freezing temperatures this morning. Precipitation may fall in the form of flurries over these passes this morning with a few centimetres of snow possible. Motorists should be cautious of locally slippery conditions and reduced visibility.”

Environment Canada Special Weather Statement for Kootenay Lake, Highway 3

Environment Canada has issued a Special weather statement Wednesday for Kootenay Lake and Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada said a vigorous cold front will bring strong winds gusting 50 to 60 km/h to the Kootenay region today.

“Strong winds combined with high water levels will result in increased wave action that may impact shorelines and lakeside roads,” the Environment Canada statement said.

“The saturated ground also increases the chances of downed trees in strong winds. Power outages are also possible.”

Environment Canada said quickly flowing water and the adjacent riverbanks are potentially unsafe so the public should not approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

On the highway passes, Environment Canada said freezing levels over the BC interior have dropped significantly in the wake of a cold front.

“Some highway passes can expect near or below freezing temperatures this morning. Precipitation may fall in the form of flurries over these passes this morning with a few centimetres of snow possible. Motorists should be cautious of locally slippery conditions and reduced visibility.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Road conditions are available at DriveBC.
