The weather has only turned warmer during the past few days but already RCMP have found drivers cranking up the speed on local highways said Sergeant Chad Badry West Kootenay Traffic and Integrated Road Safety Unit in a media release Tuesday.

Badry said with the warmer weather out, police are seeing the speeds increasing, leading to an Abbotsford man having his vehicle impounded for seven days for exceeding the 200-km mark.

“A member of the West Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit clocked a 41-year-old driver from Abbotsford doing 202 km/h in a 100 km/h zone near Castlegar,” Badry said, adding RCMP have charged seven drivers with excessive speed and impounded those vehicles.

“As a result, the (Abbotsford) male lost his vehicle for seven days and was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed with a fine of $483.”

Badry said police have also requested a review of the man’s license.

In another file unrelated to speed, Badry said a routine traffic stop allowed police to recover a significant number of tools stolen from a local hardware store.

“Members of the Integrated Road Safety Unit stopped a vehicle because it only had one headlight working,” Badry explained.

“During the subsequent investigation, police officers recovered over $700 in brand new tools still in the package stolen from a Kootenay area hardware store.”

Badry said the investigation into the theft is ongoing.

However, he said the manager of the hardware store was surprised and happy about the recovery.
