Snowfall Warning called for higher elevation highways
March appears to be arriving like a lion, especially on highways at higher elevations.
Marc Dale, Yellowhead Road & Bridge Ltd. Operations Manager for the Southeast Kootenay region said there is a Snowfall Warning for highway passes.
“It looks like old man winter is still with us,” Dale said.
“We have a Snowfall warning for higher elevation Passes over night with forecasted amounts ranging in the 15 – 20 cm area.”
Dale said drivers will experience winter driving conditions over the Kootenay Pass and Paulson Summit and slushy conditions between 800 – 1,000 meters.
“As always, weather and road conditions can change rapidly at this time of year so use extreme caution, expect winter driving conditions at higher elevation, snow and fog due to temperature changes,” Dale explained.
Drive BC is already calling for road closures on Highway 3 30 kilometers west of Creston for avalanche control between 7-9 a.m.
Environment Canada has echoed the Snowfall Warning from Paulson Summit through to Kootenay Pass on its website, calling for periods of rain mixed with wet snow ending before morning.
Environment Canada said Wednesday there’s a 30 percent chance of showers late in the morning and in the afternoon with snow level rising to 1300 metres late in the afternoon.
Of course drivers, should prior to travelling over Kootenay Pass please check with Drive BC for road updates as well as possible delays due to Avalanche Control.
