NPD officer escapes injury when driver speeds away during early morning stop

A Nelson Police officer escaped serious injury when a woman in a stolen truck decided to speed away from the parking lot behind the 7-Eleven Convenience Store on Front Street during a police check early Friday morning.
Nelson Police Sergeant Paul Bayes said in a media release that fortunately no one was hurt or any property damaged.
“While trying to take a female into custody she started her truck and drove off, nearly dragging one member with her,” Bayes said.
The incident began at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday (December 11) when members noticed two pickups parked at the back of the 7-Eleven Convenience Store not displaying front license plates.
Officers approached both drivers, noting the plates indicated the vehicles were from Alberta.
However, a check of the license plates revealed that both vehicles were stolen.
That’s when the incident went from calm to dangerous after the woman decided to take off in one of the vehicles.
“The male with the other truck was taken into custody without incident for possession of stolen property,” Bayes explained.
“The female was arrested in Kamloops and remains in custody there for numerous charges including the possession of stolen property and fleeing from police,” Bayes added.
Bayes said the 35-year-old man from Alberta remains in custody and will appear in the Nelson Law courts Monday to answer to the charges.
