Take a walk back with BC Road Trip Time Machine — Highway 3A Nelson to Balfour, 1966

Wonder what it was like driving Highway 3A from Nelson to Balfour?
Well, the Ministry of Transportation found some old footage of provincial highways in a vault somewhere of highway travels during the 60’s.
The Ministry of Transportation said these nostalgic videos (or photologs) from 16mm film footage taken in 1966.
“The original photologs were collected by rigging a camera onto the dash of a car that took still images every 80 feet or so and then running them all together as a single film.”
“As far as we know, the “Highways Department” (as it was then known) was the first organization in Canada to collect information this way in order to create a visual record of road condition information from across the province, thereby allowing our engineers to study a stretch of road without having to travel there.”
Here’s is a look at one of those BC Road Trip Time Machines, a tour of Highway 3A from Nelson to Balfour in 1966.
The trip begins in Nelson in front of the courthouse — note the Chamber of Commerce building on the left — travelling along Front Street on Highway 3A through Nelson and across the — this wasn’t BOB Big Orange Bridge quite yet — and along the North Shore.
