To the Editor:

Dear Ms Stead:

The Globe and Mail has just written off the Green Party of Canada as irrelevant as a result of the election numbers they have found. I suggest they do their sums again.

In the three provinces where the Green Party have an elected MP and/or an elected MLA the results were as follows:

  1. British Columbia between 2011 and 2015 the number of federal voters supporting the Green Party rose from 143,769 to 193,182 – a not insignificant 34.4% increase in support.
  2. On Southern Vancouver Island the Green Party of Canada went from having less than one in four votes and third place, in the capital Region of the third largest province in Canada, to nearly one in three votes and first place. Not bad for a single election cycle turnaround!!
  3. If nothing else the battle between Liberal, NDP and Green in the 2017 BC provincial election is going to be fascinating on Southern Vancouver Island.
  4. In New Brunswick while turnout rose by a little over 8% support for the Green Party rose by 69.6%, and in Frederichton their candidate went from fourth place to third ahead of the NDP. Not bad considering they only elected their first MLA in 2014, in a province where the NDP has no elected representation at all.
  5. On PEI turnout rose by just over 3%, while support for the Green Party rose by 250% in yet another Atlantic province where the NDP has no legislators and the Green Party has just elected it’s provincial leader in the spring of 2015.

Can I therefore humbly suggest that the Globe and Mail go back to school and learn to do their math properly before they write off the Green Party of Canada.
