NPD Constable handed Conditional Sentence Order after assault conviction

A Nelson Police Constable was handed a Conditional Sentence Order 30 Days House Arrest and one year probation Tuesday by BC Provincial Court Judge Richard Hewson.
Judge Hewson sentenced Const. Drew Turner at Nelson Courthouse after the Nelson Police Department officer was convicted for assault in September following an incident on May 1, 2014.
While off duty, Const. Turner punched a woman in the face while she was handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle.
Const. Turner had come to the aid of an officer who was in the process of arresting the woman for being intoxicated in a public place and breach of a previously court-ordered condition that she refrain from drinking alcohol.
During the course of the trial Judge Hewson heard testimony from three Nelson Police officers, the woman involved in the incident, the woman’s mother and Turner.
A conditional sentence is an imprisonment (jail) sentence, except that the offender serves the sentence outside of jail, under strict, jail-like conditions.
Conditional sentences are sometimes called “house arrest,” because they often require an offender to spend all or part of the sentence in their house.
Just like imprisonment, a conditional sentence will result in a conviction being registered against the offender.
