Nelson's Don Kurylko dream sailboat begins maiden voyage
Don Kurylko’s sailboat, that took years to build inside a shed on his property, no longer rests at 1300 block of Stanley Street in Nelson.
The 34-foot hand-built sailboat is on its way to the Pacific Ocean, near Richmond.
A truck came to pick up the sailboat following a brief, but special, ceremony Saturday in Nelson near Gore and Stanley Streets.
Kurylko, along with a few friends drank champagne to celebrate the maiden voyage of his prize sailboat that took decades to build.
The ceremony was held at High Noon before the truck arrived to ship the prized sailboat to the Lower Mainland.
Kurylko said he’s having sails designed back east that will be shipped out west for installation.
The first scheduled voyage on Kurylko dream sailboat is from Vancouver north up the Inside Passage.
If all goes well, Kurylko hopes to sail the Pacific Ocean on the boat he took years to build from scratch.
