Christina Lake gets $36,880 for outdoor classroom

The Christina Lake Elementary School Parent Advisory Council received a cheque from Grace McGregor, RDKB director for Christina Lake, to fund a new outdoor classroom. The outdoor learning space will improve the student learning experience and improve the school’s aesthetic.
“I’m proud to provide funding for the new outdoor space because it will show the world what we in Christina Lake already know – our school is one of the best” said Grace McGregor, RDKB director for Christina Lake.
Slated to be complete during the 2015-16 school year, the learning space will provide an innovative new classroom. Outdoor learning is known to reduce stress, increase health, and increase motivation.
“This will showcase our school to families with remote workers looking for a home base” says Sheldon Wiegel, president of the CLES PAC. “There’s no reason why they shouldn’t choose to live in Christina Lake given the safe neighbourhoods and quality education.”
The school has been looking for ways to increase the connection of students to the outdoors and to enhance its environmental curriculum. As a key community institution, the elementary school will be able to offer a competitive edge to its community promotion. The new space will also be available for community use outside of school hours.
“We know that our teachers and programs are top notch,” said principal Shawn Lockhart “But folks drive by and aren’t impressed by how the school looks. This will improve both the look of our school and the quality of outdoor education.”
