Electricity rates to go up Jan. 1

Consumers will be greeting the New Year with another hike in utility rates, according to a press release issued by FortisBC on Dec. 1.
“FortisBC has received regulatory approval for a 3.5 per cent interim rate increase for electricity customers to take effect January 1, 2015,” the release said. “The rate increase is interim and is subject to change based on further regulatory review with the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC). The rate increase for 2015 will be finalized in the New Year.”
The release said the interim rate increase works out to approximately $4.12 per month for the average residential electricity customer.
“We strive to deliver electricity safely and reliably at the lowest reasonable cost,” said Roger Dall’Antonia, Executive Vice-President Customer Service and Regulatory Affairs. “Keeping electricity rates among the lowest in North America is important to us and we do this by balancing the need for prudent investment in the system; purchasing the necessary power; and managing our general operating expenses.”
