LIBRARY MUSINGS: Where the Wild Things Are

Here at the library, we love books. No, seriously, we do. For the past few months we’ve been putting up staff book reviews on our website – but now, in newsprint for the very first time, we’ll be sharing some of these with you. But not until the end of this column. Not until I’ve shared some important messages with you all.

Where the Wild Things Are

Now that the heat wave is behind us, we can brave the river- and lake-less outdoors. Which, to some people, means it’s time for camping and hiking! WildSafeBC’s Laurie Grant will be presenting a talk on “Wild Animals and Hiking Safey” at the library on Thursday, July 24 at 6:30 pm.

Summer Reading Club

And just a reminder: Fridays are drop-in days at our Summer Reading Club. No registration required – just bring your 6-12 year old(s) to the library for crafts, games, and lots of fun. You can either bring them to the 10 am – 12 pm session, or the 1 pm – 3 pm session.

Your Next Great Read

At long last, here are those staff book reviews I promised:

Death Comes Quickly (Susan Wittig Albert): “A former lawyer turned herbalist finds herself involved in a 15 year old murder case of an art collector. A great summer read on the porch swing after the yard work is completed!”

Missing You (Harlan Coben): “A plot driven, technologically fueled thrill ride which examines the trend of online dating, builds to a frightening conclusion, and creates a can’t-put-down thriller. Be prepared to read this in one sitting.”

No Relation (Terry Fallis): “From the author of the CBC Canada Reads-winning The Best Laid Plan, this is yet another of his light and funny novels. It tells the story of Earnest Hemmingway, an aspiring writer who tries to fight through a bad case of writer’s block by following in the real Hemingway’s footsteps”

The Confabulist (Steven Galloway): “A great novel by a BC writer. Takes you behind-the-scenes at Houdini’s performances (with great explanations of how he performed his most famous tricks!), and into the depths of his tumultuous marriage. “

Delancey (Molly Wizenberg): “Love pizza? Ever dream of opening a restaurant? Then you’ll love reading about Molly Wizenberg’s adventures – one year in the life of transforming a derelict space into a hip and happening Seattle pizzeria. Includes 12 delicious recipes, easy enough for the home cook. Dig in!”

The Bend of the World (Jacob Bacharach): “Aliens, drugs, conspiracy theories, and occult rites – all against the backdrop of a corporate buyout and an unfaithful narrator. Funny at times, though with a few skippable sections.“
