LIBRARY MUSINGS: Summer on its way; 300% increase in books at library

Summer is almost here!  And when it arrives, it will bring with it corn and watermelon and floating down the river and all those great things – as well as long, lazy days at the lake. We are lucky to have such a beautiful (and warm) lake, whether we’re swimming in it, canoeing, boating, or just sitting on the beach soaking it all in. For several years now we have had a once-a-week library outpost at the Christina Lake Living Arts Centre – and I’m happy to say that each year this service gains in use and popularity.

For instance, if we compare this past April to April 2013, we had a 300 per centincrease (!) in the number of books borrowed from our lake outpost. Part of that is the increased awareness of what we’re offering, but another part is that we’re continuing to build and improve our collection – this month alone we’ve purchased dozens of new titles, including mysteries, literary fiction, kids books, and more. We welcome any feedback on the collection, so please let us know if there are any genres, authors, or titles that you’d like to see more of. On a related note, we are working on offering our very popular Lego Club at the Living Arts Centre, but we are in need of more Lego to do that. If you’ve got some kicking around at home, please consider donating it to us for that purpose.

Lego Club

And speaking of Lego, for the month of June we will have our Lego Club at the library on a weekly basis (June 6, 13, 20 and 27). We will continue to go with Friday afternoons, but we’ll be moving the time to 2 pm – 4 pm (instead of 1 – 3 pm).

Susan Juby

As I mentioned last week, we consider ourselves wonderfully lucky that one of BCs most loved writers, Susan Juby, will be here on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 am. She’ll be reading from and discussing two of her upcoming works, both of which will be published early next year: The Republic of Dirt (which is the sequel to Woefield Poultry Collective), and The Truth Commission. This is one you won’t want to miss!

Mother Goose

A reminder to those with tiny tots – our parent-child mother goose program is still happening on Saturday mornings from 10:30 am to 11:15 am, until June 21 (though we will be skipping June 7). For children ages 0-3 – it’s a great opportunity to learn some songs, rhymes, and stories for your little ones.

Book Club

Come pick up your copy of June’s book club selection – it’s the award-winning novel The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters, this comic tour de force will not disappoint! And if you have any suggestions for next year’s book club (September 2014 – June 2015), please drop them off at the library.
