Credit Union robbery suspects caught by police following high-speed car chase near Kootenay Canal

There is a clarification in the Nelson and District Credit Union robbery.
Previous information reported to The Nelson Daily said the suspects in the mid-day robbery were caught near Salmo.
The Nelson Daily has learned the suspects were not caught near Salmo, but near the Kootenay Canal.
The Nelson Daily will continue to update this story when new information becomes available.

The Nelson Daily has learned suspects believed to be involved in mid-day robbery at the Nelson and District Credit Union have been apprehended by police near Salmo.
Two suspects in the robbery were caught following a high-speed car chase that ended with a crash near Salmo.
Details on the robbery remain sketchy, but what The Nelson Daily has learned is one suspect wearing a hoodie walked into the financial institution at Ward and Vernon Streets at approximately 2:20 p.m.
The suspect proceeded behind the teller cages to the location of the commercial teller.
The Nelson Daily has not been able to confirm if the suspect was armed.
The suspect then exited the branch where he hopped the parking lot railing to a waiting bicycle in the parking lot behind Kootenay Savings Insurance.
The suspect then proceeded to a waiting car in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Wholesale Club where staff, on a break, saw the man get into a white car.
The car headed along Lakeside Drive and onto Hall Street.
A few minutes later another witness said police chasing a vehicle, believed to be a white Nissan Sentra with a man in the passenger seat dressed in a hoodie, shortly after the robbery.
The witness thought a woman was driving the vehicle.
A high-speed police chase followed along Highway 6 toward Salmo.
Police apprehended the two suspects following a car crash near Salmo.
The credit union was closed for the rest the day while police interviewed all staff.
Two weeks ago to the day (April 11) the Kootenay Exchange on Vernon Street in Nelson was robbed.
An armed male entered the local currency business at 1:15 p.m, brandishing a firearm.
The suspect described as a male standing 5’8”, with a medium build, wearing a blue baseball cap under a black hoodie, baggy light grey sweat pants and dark shoes, threatened staff and discharged his weapon.
The suspect fled the scene on a stolen green Kona road bike.

The Nelson Daily has learned the Nelson and District Credit Union was robbed Friday afternoon at approximately 2:20 p.m.
Few details are available at this time but witnesses said the robber, dressed in a hoodie, came into the financial institution and went to where the teller’s area to the commercial window.
The credit union has been closed and all staff was locked down.
Witnesses said the robber exited the rear of the credit union and jumped the parking lot railing to an awaiting bicycle somewhere behind Kootenay Insurance Services.
It is believed the suspect then headed to the Wholesale Club on Lakeside Drive where a car was waiting.
Staff said they saw a man jump into a waiting white car.
The vehicle then headed along Lakeside Drive and onto Hall Street.
Another witness said police chasing a vehicle, believed to be a white Nissan Sentra with a man in the passenger seat dressed in a hoodie, shortly after the robbery.

Witnesses said the robber exited the rear of the credit union and jumped the parking lot railing to an awaiting bicycle somewhere behind Kootenay Insurance Services.
Police, on foot and in vehicles, were on the scene in seconds.
Another witness said police were pursuing a man, who was a passenger in a white Nissan Sentra and dressed in a hoodie, shortly after the robbery.
Several, marked and unmarked, police vehicles were seen in the area.
