Only minor injuries in 14-vehicle pile-up on TransCanada near Golden

Fully 14 vehicles were involved in a crash on the TransCanada Highway yesterday, accordng to RCMP Sgt. Mike Pears.
“RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway at the top of Heather Hill, approximately 50 kilometers west of Golden. While en route, reports were received of additional vehicles being involved in the collision,” he said.
“Upon arrival of RCMP, B.C. Ambulance and Parks Canada, a total of nine tractor trailer units, three private vehicles, one pickup pulling a trailer and a rental vehicle pulling a trailer were involved. Injuries appeared to be minor and those injured were transported to hospitals in Golden and Revelstoke.
“This collision started as a result of a west bound commercial tractor trailer unit jack-knifing on the highway and totally blocking the road. It was snowing at the time, the road was snow-covered,” he said, adding these are conditions to be expected at this time of year and in this location.
“As vehicles came into this area some were unable to stop and ran into each other, others tried to avoid contact with other vehicles however multiple collisions occurred.

Pears said RCMP are reminding motorists that it is still winter on area highways. The use of good snow tires is recommended. Please allow extra time to get to your destination and adjust your speed to the conditions of the highways.
