The Canadian Cancer Society is calling on residents of the Boundary Country to volunteer for this year’s Relay For Life. The 2013 Relay in Boundary Country was an outstanding success that saw 156 people participating, raising $50,000 for the fight against cancer.

This year’s Relay For Life will be on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at James Donaldson Park in Grand Forks. The Society has an urgent need for volunteers to make this community-driven event a success in 2014.

“For years we have had an amazing and dedicated team of volunteers put on a fantastic Relay for the Boundary with the help of Canadian Cancer society staff,” says Stacey Cassidy, Community Giving Coordinator, Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon. “There are some exciting plans underway this year however many the committee members have now retired and we need the community’s involvement to help us make this event as successful and memorable as last year’s Relay.”

For 2014, the Society is specifically looking for new volunteers for the organizing committee and has a variety of roles to suit everyone’s backgrounds. In particular, assistance is needed with organizing team recruitment, corporate sponsorship, activities, food and beverage and cancer survivor recruitment.

“Already we have 11 wonderful teams and some great volunteers signed up for the 2014 Relay,” says Cassidy. “Everyone is excited to see the event come together, but we need more help. It’s a big undertaking to make this special event happen and it becomes a lot easier when we have more hands helping. We want to ensure as many people as possible have the chance to celebrate, remember and fight back with us. For participants this event holds a lot of meaning.”

Any interested volunteers are asked to contact 2014 Leadership Chair Jennifer Edwards grandforksrelay@bc.cancer.ca or 250-443-1484.
