UPDATE: New information on pedestrian fatality in Winlaw

West Kootenay Traffic Services Cpl. John Ferguson has shed some light on last night’s pedestrian fatality, and the causes thereof:
“We’re pretty sure it’s not a suicide,” he said. “The physical evidence we can see (would indicate) that he was trying to wave the vehicle down for a ride, but was doing so in the middle of the lane.”
Ferguson said a vehicle in the oncoming lane made it impossible for the vehicle in question to swerve to avoid the pedestrain.
“We know there is some alcohol influence (on the part of the pedestrian), but we won’t know how much until toxicology comes back.”

On the Dec. 4 at 7:58 p.m. the RCMP Slocan Detachment and the West Kootenay Traffic Services attended a motor vehicle pedestrian fatality in the 6600 block of Highway 6, Appledale, Winlaw area.
A 1998 Jeep Cherokee with one male driver and female passenger where travelling south on Highway 6. The roads were dark and wet, with no artificial light in the area.
The Jeep driver noticed an oncoming car and, as it passed him, a pedestrian was located on the roadway in his path of travel. The Jeep driver attempted to avoid a collision but struck the 22-year-old Appledale Winlaw pedestrian. The pedestrian was deceased at the scene.
Alcohol is not a factor for the driver of the Jeep, who is cooperating fully with this investigation.

The West Kootenay Traffic Services and BC Coroner Service are continuing their investigation.
