BUSINESS PROFILE: ASSESSx Technology
Jocelyn Cowie, a registered massage therapist, is a prominent specialist in pain and sports injury treatment and has spent 28 years perfecting her practice and in getting to the “point of pain.” She also owns Ponderosa Pines Mountain Spa on Spencer’s Hill in Grand Forks and is the CEO and founder of AssessX Technology Ltd.
Jocelyn has an entrepreneurial spirit and has spent many years researching the physiology of soft tissue inflammation to find out why massage is so effective. She used her advanced knowledge and experience to design and develop a breakthrough, non-invasive diagnostic and treatment technology.
The leading causes of disability in people in their working years are musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain, which afflict one-third of the American populace—costs to patients in the USA alone are up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity.
Here in Canada, chronic pain has also reached epidemic proportions, affecting almost 6 million Canadians. Chronic pain is a devastating, often-debilitating condition that costs society more than cancer, heart disease and HIV combined.
John Armstrong MD, PhD, nominated Cowie for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneurial Award for her work on the Advanced Biosensor Assessment Treatment and Evaluation (ABATE) system. He has stated:
“The device could move forward a lot of personal injury lawsuits and insurance claims related to pain from soft tissue damage, which still remains very subjective. What we would like to see is some evidence of pain, some measurable evidence in a form of imaging or a data collection system.”
It is interesting to note that nurses using pain qestionnaires have statistically underestimated patients’ pain. It is obvious that we need more objective evidence to support current treatment practices. The great news is that Jocelyn’s ABATE technology has the capacity to provide this important evidence! The ABATE system locates, measures, displays and treats pain symptoms, in addition to showing treatment results. Jocelyn’s recent abstract, A Multi-Modal Biosensor to Measure Soft Tissue Pain for Evidence Based Practices, can be found here.
