Monday’s short-lived power outage is suspected to be caused by a lightning strike, according to City of Grand Forks staff. The power was out to the Western part of the city, included the Silver Kettle Village — the senior’s complex — and the Boundary Regional Hospital.

A Fortis substation breaker opened on a fault, said the City’s manager of operations Hal Wright,

Power went out at about 5 p.m. to approximately 680 residences and was out for around an hour. City staff moved these customers from electrical feeder number five to number three in order to get the power running as soon as possible.

Fortis restored power to their breaker just after 6 p.m.

The next day, the power was out again for only a few minutes as City staff moved everything back to feeder number five.
