A car fire caused Grand Forks firefighters to rush out of town late Saturday afternoon. The fire happened on Gilpin Road but was thankfully a minor incident with no injuries.

Firefighters will not investigate the cause of the car fire, but Deputy Fire Chief Kevin McKinnon suspects it was caused by a mechanical failure.
The two occupants were already out of the car by the time Grand Forks Fire Rescue arrived.

“Because of the location, near the Gilpin Grasslands, we decided to hit it hard and hit it fast,” said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin McKinnon, explaining why so many fire trucks were sent to the scene.

Firefighters were able to quickly get the car fire under control but McKinnon said the car is a write-off.

“That is happens a lot with car fires,” he said. “There is so much plastic and fabric in a car.”

Grand Forks Fire Rescue also attended a few medical calls over the weekend but say it is good that there are so few emergencies.

“With so many people in the river, it could get busy,” said McKinnon.
