'Many Mouths' set to roar as Selkirk students launch book

Selkirk College’s second year Creative Writing students are hosting a Gala for the launch of their book “Mouths of Many” on April 19th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm upstairs at The Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson. Students will be reading excerpts from their self-published anthology, while promoting sales and awareness for the Creative Writing program.
Anyone interested in Creative Writing, or anyone who wants to hear some exciting poetry and stories should come by Nelson’s Kootenay School of the Arts on 606 Victoria Street to enjoy snacks, refreshments, and mingle with other literary minded citizens. Published authors and Creative Writing instructors Adrian Barnes and Almeda Glenn Miller will be attending along with literary agent and Nelson resident, Morty Mint.
The second year Creative Writing students are split between the Castlegar and Nelson campuses, but come together to workshop, each other’s writing. With support and suggestions from fellow group members, the students edit, revise and re-submit their polished poetry or fiction.
This year the students are getting opinionated via an online blog titled “Aggro”. You can check out their aggressive poetry and essays on http://poetictrashcan.wix.com/aggro and read about social media, 50 Shades of Grey, character, dentists, wastefulness, novel and movie reviews and more!
Paige Dodsworth, the poet in charge of the Gala said, “it’s an opportunity to hear some fresh literary pieces being read by emerging writers, enjoy some wine and cheese, and leave with a copy of “Mouths of Many,” the Selkirk College Creative Writing students’ anthology — all included in the price of admission ($10)”.
“The anthology has provided students with an opportunity to participate in the composition, collaboration, design, editing, publishing, marketing and launch of a literary anthology. Literature comes alive when shared with others through the warmth of each poet/author’s voice, which is what is being offered through this community event.”
For the Creative Writing students, self-publishing an anthology was a “professional practices” project, a challenge and an opportunity to learn about the publishing industry. They are very excited about the Gala, where the book will be launched, and for the first time, these students from Nelson, Castlegar and Fruitvale will experience the rush associated with being published writers.
