Well-wishers, colleagues and family came out to send long-time city employee Lynne Burch off to retirement in style last Friday.

Stepping down from her position as chief administrative officer for the City of Grand Forks, Burch was obviously happy to be shifting into a life of leisure, beaming as she received gifts, cards, and hugs at the party.

Mayor Brian Taylor made one last farewell speech about Burch and her well-respected work on behalf of the city, becoming emotional as he spoke.

“I’ve been privileged to work with her, and I know what it feels like to leave city hall because you kicked me out once, it’s painful but you get over it,” joked Taylor. “(Lynne) will be remembered for asset management – sounds boring I know. In fact she’s leaving the city in better shape than it’s ever been. Her long term vision is what she brought through her years of experience. Congratulations, all your friends are here, obviously you’ve touched many lives.”

Having served with six different councils since 1987, Burch acknowledged the support of her colleagues and family throughout her 25 years of dedicated service.

“Those of us in public service know that this is a job like no other,” Burch responded. “It is an honour and a privilege to serve the public. So tonight I thank the taxpayers that have given me that chance and pleasure to work for them. I’d like to thank all the councils for putting up with me for 25 years, and I want to thank and acknowledge my family. Without their love and support there’s no way I could have done the job.”

Although many non-profit organizations have already lined up to invite Burch to volunteer, she laughed and said she’s committed to at least one year off before deciding to fill her days with new work. She’s looking forward to spending time with her husband enjoying the outdoors.

Over the duration of the party at gallery 2 in Grand Forks about 100 people, locals and colleagues from other communities came out to send Burch off.
