POLICE BEAT: Stolen bikes and petty crimes

Petty crimes and a break and enter kept Grand Forks RCMP busy over the weekend.
The first incident happened on Saturday, May 5 at a residence on Sunshine Way in Grand Forks. Police were called out at 3:26 a.m. after a shed on the property was broken into and two bikes and an assortment of fishing gear was stolen.
A dark gray mountain bike with the word Giant on it, a blue Mongoose bike and fishing gear including a three piece bamboo fly rod were stolen from the shed, said Grand Forks RCMP staff sergeant Jim Harrison.
Police have no witnesses or suspects so far.
The second incident happened the same day but on Johnson Road in Christina Lake. Police were called out to a residence at 7:41 a.m. after the homeowner discovered his garden solar lights had been pulled out and thrown across the yard, said Harrison.
The homeowner had also reported other incidents were kids had egged his home.
It’s a continued investigation, said Harrison.
“We want to find out who is chastising this poor person,” he said.
The third incident happened on Monday, May 7 when police were called to the Pinegrove Motel on Central Avenue in Grand Forks because someone had spray painted the motel’s new sign with illegible graffeti causing $100 in damage. The new sign had just been erected and was only partially done when the damage was done, said Harrison.
Grand Forks Fields Store door damaged
A shopping cart was pushed through the front door of the Grand Forks Fields Store on Central Avenue over the weekend.
Grand Forks RCMP were called out at 2:44 a.m. on Sunday May 6 shortly after the event happened. No entry was gained and nothing was stolen, said Harrison. But the door was damaged.
Police did apprehend a suspect for questioning but came up with nothing. They will be reviewing store video surveillance footage to gather more information.

Deer cause two car collision
Two cars crashed after the first car swerved to miss two deer who had jumped out of the ditch and onto Highway 3 on Sunday, May 6.
The incident happened 5 km west of Grand Forks on Highway 3 at 6:54 a.m. A 30 year-old man from Greenwood swerved his 2004 Nissan Sentra to miss the two deer while a second driver, a 44 year-old man from Castelgar hit the first vehicle with his 2008 Ford Escape. The Escape went sideways and rolled into the ditch. Neither drivers or deer were hurt in the accident, said Harrison.
Annual Golf Tournament raises $1,500
The Terry Hamagami Scholarship Golf Tournament attracted 74 golfers and made $1,500 toward Grand Forks Secondary School scholarships on Saturday, May 5.
The annual event was held at Christina Lake Golf Course and was sponsored by the Grand Forks RCMP, the golf course and the tournament’s namesake’s mother, Nobi Hamagami of Christina Lake.
The number of golfers was nearly double from last year, said Harrison.
“It went very well,” said Harrison, who couldnt’ attend himself because he was participating in the Spring Fling parade in Grand Forks the same day.
“We raised $1,500 for students and we are quite pleased with that.”
Last year three $800 scholarships were given out. Usually the committee gives out two scholarships, but they couldn’t decide between the three finalists last year so they used some reserve funds to top them up. This year the committee will decided how many and how much they will be awarding at the GFSS grad ceremonies in June.
