Historically, the Boundary Women’s Coalition has celebrated International Women’s Day in Grand Forks.  This year, at the suggestion of women living in the West Boundary, International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Midway Community Hall on Thursday, Mar. 8.

The early afternoon event was well supported with more than 50 people in attendance.  The hall was adorned with interesting handmade quilts from the Rumpelstiltskin Quilting group along with handmade floral arrangements from the Christina Lake Guide and Pathfinders troupe.

Once again, the Grand Forks Credit Union made a significant donation to this event.  The Boundary Women’s Coalition appreciates the support of these community partners and extends a sincere thank you to them.

Each year, the Boundary Women’s Coalition provides an opportunity on International Women’s Day for members of the community to honour Boundary women who have made a significant contribution in the areas of Community Leader, Inspiring Friend, Woman in Business, Healthy Role Model, Inspiring Youth and Inspiring Senior.

It is an opportunity to recognize the everyday efforts of women who contribute to a healthy quality of life for their friends, family and associates in the Boundary area.  These women are the spark for the rest of us to be the best that we can be.

This year, 21 women were celebrated.  They are:

Community Leader: Alison Turner, Ann Rexin, Christy Luke, Cindy Alblas, Deborah Baker, Jennifer Turner, Judy Lyon, Karren Donald, Lucinda Dupee, Patricia Pownall, Stephanie Boltz, Vivien Browne
Inspiring Friend: Barb Puskeppelies, Brenda LaCroix, Della Mallette, Joan Holmes, Karren Donald, Kate Rennette
Woman in Business: Jackie Metcalfe
Healthy Role Model: Julie Damore, Marge Henderson, Suzanne Lee
Inspiring Youth: no nominations
Inspiring Senior: Vivien Browne

These women’s stories and their acceptance comments at the event are a testament to the significance of relationships in making things happen, in enriching lives and in strengthening our communities.

The Boundary Women’s Coalition is thankful to these women for their contributions and is more than pleased to provide an opportunity for the community to recognize their significant impact.

International Women’s Day 2013 will be celebrated Friday, Mar. 8 at the Christina Lake Community Hall.
