BC MP Nathan Cullen brings leadership campaign to West Kootenays

Nathan Cullen is visiting the West Kootenays and Grand Forks November 13, 14 and 15, as part of his campaign to lead the federal NDP. Cullen, a four-term MP from the northern BC riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley, is on a prolonged tour of his home province.
“One of the things I like most about British Columbia is it’s so far from Ottawa,” he said. “It’s a place where new ideas and new politics emerge, and people focus on getting things done not Ottawa’s games.”
Cullen said he’s convinced that New Democrats and other progressive Canadians are open to new ideas that defeat Stephen Harper and his brand of divisive politics.
Recently, he unveiled a propsal to hold joint nomination meetings among federalist, progressive parties in Conservative-held seats.
“Co-operating and working together are Canadian values,” he said. “And it’s time we had a government that reflected them. The days of 40 per cent of voters giving Mr Harper a majority must end.”
Cullen said he’s received lots of support for the idea, and urged people in the West Kootenays to get involved.
“Politics isn’t a spectator sport. If people want new politics, it’s time to pitch in.”
He said Canada needs a progressive government to finally act on climate change, voting reform and narrowing the dangerous growth in economic inequality.
Cullen, 39, was first elected in 2004 and is the only Western candidate to run for NDP leadership — and also the only candidate to have defeated a Conservative MP.
