LETTER: Smart meters or smarter people

Minister Rich Coleman and Premier Christy Clark have not learned a thing.  Even though the government spent millions on ads (that did not make sense by the way) the people did not support the harmonized sales tax.  I only hope that this smart meter initiative will have the same fate.  

These meters will not save energy, as we still have to cook supper on the stove, heat water with the same water tank, and use the same dishwasher.  My furnace still had to heat my house….is the government saying that I am supposed to do this at 8 or 9 p.m.?  I think not.  Are they trying to save electricity so that they will be able to export more power to the United States?   If there concern is about power being stolen that happens before the meter not after.  If and when my power goes out, it still takes the lineman time to get out and fix the problem.  How is this going to improve the length of the outage?   And what are they going to do with all the old meters?  This appears to be a waste of money that the customers will have to cover by an ongoing rate increase   Does this not infringe on our privacy rights?  You have to go through the freedom of information process to get information on the government, but this same group will be getting information on me that I have no control over.  What will they be doing with that information?   Most of the local government representatives at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention were opposed to this.  Rich Coleman, the minister responsible, does not care what the people want.  Even though we have a new leader, this sounds like the same government as before.   I retired from West Kootenay Power having worked in the meter dept for 30 years.   Joe Tatangelo    Christina Lake
