West Kootenay competitors win big at Nelson events during 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Seniors Games

The Kootenay Robusters won the silver medal for Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary at the 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Seniors Games Dragon Boat Races Friday at Lakeside Park in Nelson.
Dragon Boat racing was just one of the events staged in the Heritage City.
FLC Fortified Women of Fraser Valley edged the Robusters for the top prize.
Kootenay Rhythm Dragons, the other team from Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary entered, finished fourth.
In other Nelson events, the team of Dale Morehouse and Walter Schleiss of Revelstoke won the mixed 55-plus duplicate bridge gold medal over Leif Pedersen and PoZay Wong of Burnaby.
In the cribbage competition, the Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary team of Elmer and Monk and Elvina Jans of Castlegar took home the silver medal, losing out to the Cranbrook team of Gerald Joliffe and Olga MacDonald.
In cycling, Mike Adams of Nelson won a gold medal in the men’s 55-59 division time trials.
Murray Behl of Grand Forks took home the bronze medal. Chris Dejardins of Nelson was seventh, Frank Fodor of Castlegar eighth and Nipper Kettle of Greenwood ninth.
Ed DeVries of Nelson won the gold in the men’s 70-74 time trial. Danny Babin of Nelson was fourth in the men’s 60-64 time trial while Bob McLean of Grand Forks was seventh.
Gary Babin of Grand Forks won the bronze in men’s 65-69 time trial.
Barry Benner of Trail was seventh.
Rino DeBiasio of Trail won the bronze in the men’s 75-79 time trial. Ted Ibrahim of Nelson was fifth.
John Tees of Winlaw won the gold medal in the men’s 85-89 time trial while Louise Poole of Nelson captured the gold medal in women’s 55-59 time trial.
Karen Lees of Trail earned the silver behind Poole. Yvonne Tremblay of Nelson claimed the bronze in the women’s 75-79 time trial.
In ice hockey at the NDCC Arena, the Kootenay Glazier Kings lost out to Schooners of Fraser Valley in the final of the men’s 55-plus.
The team consists of former Western International Senior Hockey League players from Trail Smoke Eaters and Nelson Maple Leafs.
In the men’s 60-plus, Salmon Arm Cavaliers won the gold medal over Gringo’s of Lower Mainland.
The Cavaliers included former Nelson Maple Leaf defenceman Hugh Hooker.
