Shootout decides medals at 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Senior Games, host Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary loses in bronze-medal finale
At Millennium Park in Castlegar, shootout was the name of the game as the tie-breaker was needed to decide most of the medals during the sport of soccer at the 2011 West Kootenay B.C. Senior Games.
Unfortunately, for the host Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary medals were not in the cards as Vancouver Island South edged the hosts 5-4 in shootout to capture the bronze medal of Men’s 55-plus Soccer Friday morning.
Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary has battled the Island power to a scoreless tie thanks to the stellar goalkeeping from David Lawrence.
The diminutive Lawrence made a few key saves, including a lunge to knock away a loose ball in the six-yard box in the second half, to preserve the tie.
Zone 6 West Kootenay/Boundary finished the round robin draw winless in three starts but was a different team in the bronze-medal final.
Zone 5 Okanagan/Similkameen defeated Vancouver Island North of Nanaimo in the gold medal match.
In Men’s 60-plus, Zone 5 Okanagan/Similkameen squandered a 2-1 lead late in the game before edging Vancouver Island North in shootout.
Zone 5 Okanagan/Similkameen appeared to have the game locked up, despite needing to withstand a late charge by Van Island North.
However, Van Island North tied the contest at 2-2 on a penalty shot to force the tie-breaking shootout.
In the Men’s 60-plus bronze medal final, South Central edged Vancouver Island South in shootout.
