JT Nero is out and about on a CD release tour, along with Allison Russell, for his new album, mountains/forests; a delicious set of small tragic-comedies, recorded over two days in a northern Wisconsin cabin, with contributions from the Clouds and Po’ Girl.

It’s a real singers’ record, centerpieced by Nero’s harmony work with Po’ Girl’s Allison Russell and Michelle McGrath, late of The Capital Sun Rays.

As part of this tour, Nero is coming back to Grand Forks, and will be in concert at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 28, at gallery 2 (524 Central Ave at 5th Street).

Nero will be familiar to those who attended the Po’ Girl concert at gallery 2 last October; a self-styled wandering mystic, stumbling misfit, moping misanthrope, movable feaster, crooner, and poet.

JT’s father played point guard for the Washington Generals, the team that traveled with the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1970s, losing every night while serving as their comic punching bags.

Most of JT’s beliefs about the absurdity of life and the inevitability of loss were formed in these years.

He learned doo wop songs and spirituals from Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal, two of the most famous Globetrotters, on the back of the team bus, and still cites these two men as his biggest musical influences.

He has developled into a fearsome singer and songwriter, known for his work leading the eclectic soul outfit, JT and the Clouds, and for his constant touring and collaborating with Canadian roots bedazzlers, Po’ Girl.

The mountain/forest tour is coming to absolutely explode your mind and spirit, then rebuild them with love and gentle care.

Tickets for this April 28th JT Nero and Allison Russell concert (limited to 60) are available at gallery 2: $12 for gallery 2 members or $15 for non-members. To reserve your tickets, please call gallery 2 at 442-2211.
