Up against over 150 racers from ages five through12-years-old who enjoyed a full day of racing the Phonenix Mountain Racers participated in their first zone race of the season for the Kootenay Region Nancy Greene Ski League held at Red Mountain in Rossland. Salmo, Red Mountain, WhiteWater and Summit Lake, and our own Phoenix Mountain Racers were all represented on race day Jan. 23. At the end of the day, the Phoenix Mountain Racers finished a respectful third in both categories.   “We’re very happy with the results today,” says Coach Andrew McKinlay. “The season has just begun and, for some of our racers, today is their first day racing. The terrain can be tricky at Red Mountain and everyone stepped up to the plate. Most importantly, the entire team had a great time.” McKinlay is assisted by Coach Bill Ahrens. Both bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the program. “We’re very fortunate to have both Bill and Andrew,” says President Ken Makortoff. “The kids are learning and feeding off their leadership and enthusiasm for the sport”.   The Phoenix Mountain Racers would like to thank the significant support they’ve received from the Boundary Region this year. Unifab Industries, Bron and Sons, RDKB Area D official Irene Perepolkin and Roxul Industries have each provided much needed financial support for the Club along with the parents of the racers who contribute significantly to the success of this program. “It’s really terrific to see this community come together to support this programs,” says Makortoff. “We recognize the difficult economic times, and are truly overwhelmed by the support we’ve received this year.”   The Phoenix Mountain Racers are 23 strong this year and are participating in the program which teaches basic skiing techniques and skills in as many different snow conditions and terrains as possible. Most of all, racers are taught how to have fun on skis!   On Feb. 13, 2011 the Phoenix Mountain Racers will host a race at the Phoenix Mountain. Over 150 racers are expected to participate. They invite everyone to come and enjoy the day and see the Club proudly represent the community and the ski hill! Good luck Phoenix Mountain Racers!  For more information on the Phoenix Mountain Racers contact Jennifer Wetmore at jennifer.wetmore@telus.net or 250-444-777 or Ken Makortoff at 250-442-1210.
