The first annual snow sculpting competition held in Grand Forks on Saturday, Jan. 23 left some interesting shapes in city park for the Olympic Torch Relay celebrations. Four teams entered the inaugural event sponsored by Les Johnson of What’s Up In Grand Forks. One team had to give up due to the snow conditions, but the other entrants were successful in their designs.

“The competition went well despite there was no snow – thanks to Emcon (Services Inc.) who brought in the much needed snow,” said Johnson.  “I must admit I was leery that the event it was actually going to come off but it was well attended despite the conditions. I had a good time, everyone who participated had a good time and they said they’d come back again.”

Johnson said he couldn’t have done it without the help of city hall, and the community volunteers who stepped up to make this happen. Johnson said that Cher Wyers, of the Chamber of Commerce of Grand Forks was particularly instrumental in making the whole event happen.

Winners were: Team Breedveld, Randy and Suzanne whose son Greg carried the torch along part of the relay in Osoyoos on Monday, Jan. 25. Second place went to Team Canada for their inukshuk and third place went to Team City.
