UPDATED: RCMP release name of man buried in landslide

RCMP have identified the man who is missing and presumed dead after a landslide at Tappen, near Salmon Arm Saturday as 76-year-old Roy Frederick Sharp.

Police said Sharp was last seen inside his home along Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road.

That area was hit by a mudslide early Saturday.

According to RCMP, search crews have been on site throughout the weekend but have been unable to locate Sharp.

Salmon Arm RCMP have confirmed that a resident of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road in Tappen, BC is unaccounted for, following an overnight mudslide which enveloped a home.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a media release Salmon Arm RCMP and local Fire Dept responded to a report of a mudslide in the 5900 Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road in Tappen BC early on Saturday, May 6.

Tappen is located near Salmon Arm on Highway 1.

RCMP has confirmed that one home was completely enveloped by the overnight mudslide, with the possibility of others being partially damaged.

We can confirm to date that we have spoken to family of the 76-year-old male resident, who was last known to be inside the home," Moskaluk said.

The Salmon RCMP has activated resources from the Shuswap Search and Rescue Team, Tappen and Salmon Arm Fire Departments.

As of (Saturday morning) the Columbia Shuswap Regional District representatives began assessing the situation in order to safely access and make entry into the home to search for the man," Moskaluk added.

Moskaluk said at the time of the report, Salmon Arm RCMP officers completed a tactical evacuation of several residences, which were possibly at risk.

The slide has block road access to approximately 100 homes.
