A fire at the information gazebo on Christina Lake Frontage Road caused $400 in damage.

Christina Lake Fire Department were called out to put out the small blaze on Thursday, March 15 at 7:22 p.m.

The plastic panel of the gazebo was damaged but due to the speedy response by the fire department, the rest was saved.

The fire appears to have been started with paper, which is an unusual way to start a fire, said Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sergeant Jim Harrison.

So far police have no witnesses or suspects. Anyone with information about the incident are encouraged to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.

Taped truck

Duck tape and eggs greeted vehicles traveling down Highway 3 in the early morning hours of Friday, March 16.

Some young people were seen stretching duck tape across the highway sometime before 12:08 a.m., when police were called out. A chip truck ran into the tape, but no one was injured, said Harrison. There were also reports of eggs being thrown at passing vehicles. By the time police arrived, the culprits were gone.

“This is obviously a dangerous practice,” said Harrison, adding their actions luckily didn’t cause any damage or accidents.

Cards stolen from unlocked vehicle

A Mastercard, debit card and a pair of reading glasses were reported stolen from a vehicle on Saturday, March 17 at 11:17 a.m.

The theft happened sometime between the morning of March 17 and the evening of Friday, March 16. The vehicle had been parked on 10th Street in Grand Forks and was unlocked.

“No surprise (that it was broken into),” said Harrison. “Please lock your vehicles because you’re making it easy for the criminals.”

Spring road conditions lead to accidents

Grand Forks RCMP attended two accidents caused by the slippery road conditions caused by the spring thaw.

The first accident was on Tuesday, March 13 at 3:58 a.m. at the top of Spencer Hill on Highway 3, 15 kilometers west of Grand Forks.

The driver of a fully loaded 2007 Kenworth tractor trailer lost control on the slushy road, slid up against the rock embankment causing a lot of damage to the vehicle but no injuries to himself, said Harrison.

The second accident happened on Saturday, March 17 at 7:53 a.m. on Highway 3 by Eholt Road. The 48 year-old man from Langley, B.C. lost control of his gray 2008 Toyota Tacoma on the slippery road. The vehicle hit the snowy embankment and then rolled. The driver sustained no injuries.
