Local non-profits put themselves on the MAAP

Three Grand Forks organizations have found a way to come together and pool their resources by forming the Multi-Agency Accommodation Project (MAAP).

Habitat for Humanity, Whispers of Hope and The Boundary Emergency and Transitional Housing Society (BETHS) are leasing 7212 Riverside Drive from the City of Grand Forks.

The project has been in the works for at least six months and is unique to Grand Forks.

Pharmacy now available at Christina Lake

Christina Lake’s Pharamsave is officially open. Although the business opened its doors on March 11, the grand opening was held May 17 with treats available for anyone who stopped by.

“It’s been going great,” said front store manager Shannon Lahti, adding they had seen at least 70 people in the first part of the day.

The Pharmasave fills a much needed gap in the lake’s resources.

Grand Forks could be getting a Canada Post outlet

Canada Post is looking to open a franchise outlet in Grand Forks. The franchise will be based out of an established business, but it hasn’t been determined which business will host the new outlet.

“We have a retail group that talks to businesses,” said Canada Post spokesperson John Caines on the process of finding the right business. He added that often business will approach them because an outlet will bring more traffic into their stores.

A 72-hour job action notice that could've seen as many as 225 Fortis BC employees, including those here in Castlegar, Trail, South Slocan, Warfield and Rossland, on strike as of Sunday hasn't amounted to much, according to Fortis spokesman Neal Pobran.

Pobran said no action was taken Sunday, and minimal action is being taken today (Monday).

Interfor nets almost $18 million

International Forest Products Limited (Interfor) reported net income of $17.8 million or $0.32 per share before share-based compensation expense and other items in the first quarter of 2013.

These results compare with net earnings, reported on the same basis, of $3.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 and a loss of $4.1 million in the first quarter of last year.

Saddle store relocates to Greenwood

Greenwood residents won’t have to go far to get their leather-work done. Ingram Creek Saddlery is moving from rural Midway to the main strip in Greenwood.

“We will be right between the bank and the liquor store,” said Bob Bugeaud, who owns the store with his wife Margaret Ann.

The saddle store has been in business for about five years in Midway, but they have always worked out of their farm, which is located 9 km West of Highway 3.

New u-brew opens in Grand Forks

New business owner Grant Hill is following his dream. He’s opened Kettle River Vintners, a store that sells wine and beer-making kits and offers “u-brew” services.  

The store is the only one of its kind in the area. Previously, brewers had to choose from a limited variety of wine kits and then make them at home. The process was tricky because it takes up so much room and the start-up is expensive.

Grand Forks Credit Union reviews finances at AGM

The Grand Forks Credit Union is on solid ground and climbing, according to reports made at their annual general meeting April 18.

“The numbers have gone up consistently,” said Kelly Thomas, the credit union’s chief executive officer (CEO).

The credit union’s retained earnings have increased 51 per cent from 2008 to 2012 and has had “above average” operating income for the past three years.

“The credit union remains in healthy and advantageous positions,” said Thomas.

Selkirk teams with local business to compost for Earth Day

For two weeks this year, in celebration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the downtown Castlegar office of RHC Insurance, with the help of Gaia Janitorial Services, is sending their compostables like lunch scraps, coffee grounds and used paper towels over to Selkirk College.

In 2011, Selkirk College began operating a large composting vessel as part of a pilot composting program on their Castlegar campus.
