Weather makes for gentle start to fire season in our region

Rain and cooler temperatures have so far led to a comparatively calm start to the fire season in our region, according to Southeast Fire Centre information officer Ashlene Aktarian.

“We’re seeing a low level of fire activity in the southeast fire centre due to rainfall,” Aktarian said. “We have three active fires in the region, and they are all very small, less than one hectare, and they are all under control.”

One is just outside Kimberley, another outside Golden, and a third is outside Christina Lake.

Campfires are still allowed in the region – there is only a Category 3 burning ban in effect – but Aktarian cautions people against complacency when it comes to preventable fires.

“We want to remind people that human-caused fires divert critical resources away from lightning-caused fires, and they are completely preventable,” Aktarian said. “We can’t stress enough that the public needs to be safe while conducting permitted burning.”

If you see a wildfire, please report it by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cellphone.
