Call me old-fashioned – but I still love newspapers. I like newspapers, and I like traditional music. Lucky for me, this month we’re showing a wonderful NFB documentary on a thriving newspaper in small-town Ontario, and we’ve got the spectacularly talented Vazzy duo returning yet again to share some tunes from Acadia, Quebec and France. But more on that in just a moment…

Movie Night
Come to the library on Thursday, June 12 at 6:30 pm for our latest NFB Film Club offering: Unheralded and The Portrait. Unheralded is a documentary about an independent weekly newspaper in Lakefield, Ontario that is somehow making a go at the slowly declining newspaper business. The second film, The Portrait, is about artist Phil Richards, who’s commissioned to create Canada’s official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee. The total length of these two movies is 70 minutes. Popcorn will be served!

B & B
Thinking of opening up a Bed & Breakfast? Or of writing a book? Or, why the heck not: both? In any case, I’ll get to the point – Bobby Hutchinson will be at the library on Thursday June 19, at 6:30 pm to talk about her One Book One Kootenay shortlisted book Blue Collar B&B: Adventures in Hospitality. It’s the story of her experience opening and running a B&B, with a lightheartedness and a sense of humour that you are sure to love!

Lego Club
And just a reminder: for the month of June we will have our Lego Club at the library on a weekly basis (June 6, 13, 20 and 27). We will continue to have it on Friday afternoons, but we’ll be moving the time to 2 pm – 4 pm (instead of 1 – 3 pm).

Vazzy
As promised above, Vazzy has kindly accepted our invitation to bring their toe-tapping (I mean foot-stamping!) music to the library on Tuesday, June 24 at 6:45 pm, in celebration of St-Jean Baptiste Day. Their lively show will include dance tunes from the French-Canadian and Canadian repertoire, and if past years are any indication, you’ll want to arrive a few minutes early if you want a good seat! All ages welcome, and refreshments will be served.

Board Meeting
The library board will be meeting on Wednesday, June 18 – we have moved our meeting time from 4 pm to 12 pm.
