The 81 graduates of the Grand Forks Secondary School bid a fond farewell to their childhood and gazed excitedly into a promising future during the commencement ceremonies, Saturday, June 16.

The Grand Forks Arena was packed with family, friends and well wishers as the excited and dazzlingly dressed students paraded on to risers to receive their hard-earned diplomas.

The “mobile generation” as SD 51 director of instruction Maxine Ruzicka called them during her speech, will know no limits in what they can do and dream.

“You are entering a world that changes rapidly,” said Ruzicka. “You are referred to as the mobile generation. You can google for an answer, you can google for a career but you can’t google to find what is in your heart. (But) the passion that takes you skyward doesn’t change …”

Teacher speaker Terry Nuyten left the grads speechless and got them to their feet for a standing ovation.

“You are the reason we come to work everyday,” said Nuyten proudly. “You are the reason we love to teach.”

Valedictorians Kara Plotnikoff and Evan Laudrum left the audience in stitches over their reminisence of school years well enjoyed.

Grads received more than $60,000 in scholarship and bursary money from the community.
