Over 100 children gathered colourful eggs at the first of what they hope will be an annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday. The event was hosted by the River Valley Community Church, which put out 3,000 eggs for the children to collect.

The events were held at Grand Forks’ City Park with the activities starting at 10 a.m. As families arrived, they registered for a draw and took part in events like face painting, bowling and a small petting zoo that included baby goats and chicks.

Church member Brent Hummel held a sermon before the hunt and then the kids lined up by age to scoop up the eggs. After the big event, draws were held for prizes and the kids went back to the other activities or played at the playground.

Volunteers tossed candy to the kids throughout the event and distributed even more by hand to make sure no one was missed.

Cindy Anthony, a church member and volunteer, said ministers David and Rachel Warriner came up with the idea.

“It seemed like a fun thing to do,” she said.

The event was organized in less than a month thanks to the help of about 20 volunteers plus numerous donations of prizes and candy from the community.

Anthony hasn’t had time to think about next year’s event, but anticipates that they will be prepared for more children and move the programs along at a faster pace.
