Early morning fire guts outbuilding on Morgan Street in Nelson

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services had an early start to Monday, responding to an early morning structure fire in the 200 block of Morgan Street.

In a media release Monday, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said it was a maximum response as crews worked diligently to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent homes.

“Both on-duty members responded immediately with 16 additional members responding from home,” the Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media release said.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, there were large freely burning flames coming from three sides of an outbuilding (Electric Cedar Sauna) in a residential area.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media release said the fire, called in a 12:51 a.m., was extinguished 15 minutes after first arrival.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media firefighters spent the next hour ensuring full extinguishment and began a fire investigation on-site before returning to the station at 3:50 a.m.

“The fire appears to have originated in the front change room portion of the sauna while the cause is still under investigation,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said 18 firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, one ladder truck and two utility vehicles. 

Additional assistance was provided by Nelson City Police in the early stages of the fire.

“Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of this incident,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said. “Damage is estimated at $15,000.”
