More than 48 volunteers removed truck loads of garbage from Christina Lake streets during the 12th annual Christina Lake Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 26.

Not only did the group of volunteers, which included everyone from four to 75 years-old, clean up along the main highway frontage, but they also went through the Ponderosa area, and up some hard hit garbage roads like Santa Rosa.

Surprisingly its not along Highway 3 that is hardest hit with litter bugs. The dirt roads like Santa Rosa and Stewart Creek Road are often worse because people like to take their garbage up there and dump it, said Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) coordinator, Brenda LaCroix.

When the CLSS started Cleanup Day 12 years ago, volunteers were picking up things like old television sets and household garbage. Today there’s less of that and more plastic wrappings from food and some beverage bottles and cans the bottle pickers miss.

“It does make a difference,” said LaCroix.

When people come into our area they don’t see garbage and that spurs on the thought, don’t litter.

The quantity of garbage has also changed. Every year the garbage gets less, said LaCroix. But people still dump some interesting things like a burnt out old mattress box spring found this year.

After the cleanup, which took only a few hours with so many volunteers, participants entered their names into a draw for a multitude of goody bags filled with stuff donated by local businesses.
