Local non-profits put themselves on the MAAP

Three Grand Forks organizations have found a way to come together and pool their resources by forming the Multi-Agency Accommodation Project (MAAP).

Habitat for Humanity, Whispers of Hope and The Boundary Emergency and Transitional Housing Society (BETHS) are leasing 7212 Riverside Drive from the City of Grand Forks.

The project has been in the works for at least six months and is unique to Grand Forks.

Pharmacy now available at Christina Lake

Christina Lake’s Pharamsave is officially open. Although the business opened its doors on March 11, the grand opening was held May 17 with treats available for anyone who stopped by.

“It’s been going great,” said front store manager Shannon Lahti, adding they had seen at least 70 people in the first part of the day.

The Pharmasave fills a much needed gap in the lake’s resources.

The City of Grand Forks advises of changes to the Traffic Flow at the intersection located at 72nd Avenue and 8th Street. The installation of the new island to condense the intersection intends to improve the safety through better visibility and creating a reduction in speed.

Well, that was just about the most bizarre election ever.

Not on the local front – that came out exactly as expected, with incumbent NDP MLA Katrine Conroy taking a landslide victory with 10,606 votes (or 62.99 per cent of the popular vote), Liberal candidate Jim Postnikoff getting 3,592 votes (21.33 per cent), independent Joseph Hughes walking away with 2,239 votes (13.3 per cent), and independent Glen Byle taking 400 votes (2.38 per cent).

73-year-old Castlegar woman faces two years in jail
On May 15, 73-year-old Joyce Ramsden was convicted of trafficking in cocaine and sentenced to two years in jail.
 
Forty-four-year-old Rodney Gritchen was found guilty of Possession of cocaine and handed a $400 fine.
 
The matter regarding the third male, 49-year-old Peter Nevakshonoff, is still before the courts and he is scheduled to appear in September.

RDKB closes free refuse bin sites

Five free garbage and recycling bins in the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) have been closed, as of May 1. 

The bins were located at Larson Road and Texas Point in Christina Lake, Jewel Lake, Bridesville and Westbridge but now residents will have to travel to the nearest landfill to dispose of their waste. 

BC election results not as expected

George Longden got to the poll on two wheels as part of the "Bike to Vote" campaign.

BC’s 40th provincial election finished with more than a few surprises.

In the Boundary-Similkameen, Liberal candidate Linda Larson was elected as the newest MLA.
